Airborne Respiratory Diseases and Mechanical Systems for CONTROL OF MICROBES

چکیده

diseases in indoor environments remains a problem of indoor air quality (IAQ) with few engineering alternatives and for which performance goals and design parameters are unclear. The engineer who attempts to deal with microbial IAQ finds that pertinent microbiological information exists in abundance but not in easily digestible forms. This article summarizes the relevant literature of medical microbiology and aerobiology in a manner that engineers may find useful and informative and that will facilitate the design of HVAC systems intended to reduce the threat. The general principles presented here can be applied to any indoor environment, including office buildings, schools, residences, hospitals, and isolation wards.

The effect of mechanical ventilation and clothing on airborne microbes and wound sepsis in hospital operating rooms, Part 1

This article is the first part of a review of investigations carried out until about 1990 into the role of mechanical ventilation in reducing wound sepsis in hospitals. It deals with the design of mechanical ventilation systems to reduce airborne microbe-carrying particles (MCPs), and mainly discusses unidirectional airflow (UDAF) systems. The second part will deal with the effect of mechanical...

The aerodynamic behaviour of respiratory aerosols

Introduction / objectives Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) claim on average 90,000 lives each year in the U.S., nearly three times the number of annual highway deaths. Although fewer than 15% of HAIs are directly attributable to airborne transmission, more than a third may be caused by surface microbes aerosolized by the movement of air from building systems, people and equipment. As a resul...

The effect of mechanical ventilation and clothing on airborne microbes and wound sepsis in hospital operating rooms, Part 2

This article is the second part of a review into the importance of airborne microbe-carrying particles (MCPs) as a cause of wound sepsis after surgery. The roles of mechanical ventilation and occlusive surgical clothing in reducing airborne microbe-carrying particles (MCPs) and surgical site infections (SSIs) are discussed in this part.

Mechanical ventilation in an airborne epidemic.

With the increasing threat of pandemic influenza and catastrophic bioterrorism, it is important for intensive care providers to be prepared to meet the challenge of large-scale airborne epidemics causing mass casualty respiratory failure. The severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak exposed the vulnerability of health care workers and highlighted the importance of establishing stringent infec...
